Equally, Comey was clear that many of Trump's inner circle - including some still in the White House - could be in serious hot water. Comey described his fear that Trump wanted to create a "patronage" debt by making Comey ask for his Federal Bureau of Investigation job.
During nearly three hours of statements Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Comey described himself as "stunned" by Trump's "very disturbing" and "very concerning" behavior towards him.
He declined, for example, to answer a question about Vnesheconombank (VEB), a Russian government-owned development bank linked to President Vladimir Putin. He is a good guy. "Hey, I hope this happens, but you've got to do your job.' That's what he told Comey".
"I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the near future", he said.
Reporter: So he lied about that?
"Well, I didn't say that".
"I hardly know the man", Trump said at the press conference.
But, the President added, "There would be nothing wrong if I did say it, according to everybody that I've read today, but I did not say that".
TRUMP: 100 percent. I hardly know the man. Collins said Trump "never should have cleared the room, and he never should have asked you, as you reported, to let it go - to let the investigation go". "Who would do that?". "And so it's time to wrap this up and it's time to move on".
"I believe the James Comey leaks will be far more prevalent than anyone ever thought possible".
In her interview Sunday, Collins added that she would support a subpoena being issued if the White House stonewalls, though she said such an order would probably come from special counsel Robert S. Mueller III and not from the Senate committee.
As the Supreme Court reminded us in the case upholding the independent counsel law, Morrison v. Olson, the Constitution imposes on the president "the obligation to ensure the faithful execution of the laws".
The Russia question has put an asterisk next to the president's election win, put the White House on a war footing, sunk his poll numbers and sucked up oxygen in Congress - which has launched multiple investigations. "Mr. Comey has now admitted that he is one of these leakers".
Trump suggested on Twitter last month that the conversation was taped, but has been evasive about it since then.
"One hundred percent", Trump said. Trump was asked if he would move the U.S.to defend North Atlantic Treaty Organisation if Russian Federation attacked; he did not answer that part of the question.
Former FBI director James Comey testifies before the Senate Intelligence Committee in the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill June 8, 2017 in Washington, DC. Michael Conaway, a Texas Republican, and Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, sent a request Friday directly to Comey for copies of his memos.
And he was asked directly if he has recordings of their conversations as he's hinted before.
Senator Angus King, a member of the Intelligence Committee, said committee staff will interview Kushner.
Friday morning, he inexplicably claimed "total and complete vindication".
"And WOW, Comey is a leaker!"
JAMES COMEY, Former Director, FBI: I need to get that out into the public square.
